Chapter 11
She took me up on my offer to come spend the night. Clancy dropped right off on the sofa after drinking a half a glass of wine. Our cats Martin and Seymour had cuddled up with her. I tucked a blanket around her feet and over her shoulders.
The next morning, she felt better.
“I’m sorry I’ve been so awful to everyone,” she said.
“Doesn’t matter. It’s over now.”
“You’ll be happy to know, I have an idea of what I should do. I have a friend in Colorado who’s been bugging me to come and visit. I think I’ll take a long weekend and fly out to see her. She’s an old high school buddy. We haven’t gotten together in ages.”
I nodded. “That sounds like a good idea. A change of scenery will help clear your head. We can do without you at the store. When’s your operation?”
“Not until the end of August. The doctor’s on vacation and I wanted to get it done before back-to-school because the store will pick up shortly thereafter.”
“That’s very thoughtful of you,” I said. “I’ll be happy to hang out with you while you recover. We can schedule Margit, Rebekkah, and Laurel to cover your hours at the store. As you know, Anya’s been pretty good at helping out, too. My aunt is flying in for Sheila’s wedding. I can ask her to stick around. She can help out. You won’t be alone, and you shouldn’t be alone for at least a week after you leave the hospital.”
“Thanks. That makes me feel better.” Clancy gave me a weak smile.
“And what about the dating site?” I asked as I poured a cup of coffee for her.
“I’m not going to give up on it yet. There’s one guy who showed a little potential. He’s an ex-Army guy who’s been too busy to get together right now. But he’s planning to retire from his business. We’ve chatted through the website, but I’ve held off on saying I’d meet with him. I’m not sure I’ve been in a good space.”
That made me laugh. “I’d say that’s an understatement.”
“Meeting him can wait until I get back from Colorado,” she said.
“When’s Bambi due to foal? Er, give birth?”
She snickered and choked on her coffee. “Ha! Right before the big forest fire, I guess. No, seriously, sometime in September. I’ve already heard she’s big as a barn. I guess Larry is beside himself. Here he married this tiny, slim, workout wonder, and next thing he knows she’s eating for a crowd of two hundred. My son thinks it’s hilarious. She can’t even latch the seatbelt around her belly any more. A part of me feels sorry and then….”
“Nah,” I said as I shook my head.
“Nah is right!”
By the time she left my house, Clancy was considerably more chipper. She text-messaged me a couple of hours later to say she’d found a great deal on airfare to Denver. Would I mind if she took off the next day? I messaged her back that I’d cover her hours.
